Nonreligious Experiences

Living as yourself in the Bible Belt can be isolating.
The therapy space shouldn't have to be.

Caring for you, just as you are.

Being a nonreligious person in the Bible Belt can add a layer to life's challenges and be a challenge all its own. Many people choosing Secular Therapy are tired of being unheard and misunderstood. Perhaps you can relate. Communicating and sorting through grief, as well as navigating community, relationships and parenting might make you feel conflicted and constrained. You need a space where you can do your work, voice your truth, and just be you.

Secular Therapy serving VA, NC, SC online and in the Charlottesville office

Helping Women and Nonbinary Adults openly share and investigate your experiences to better understand your truth.

Do any of the following resonate with you?

  • Social isolation or rejection adds a layer to your challenges.

  • You struggle with finding true connections in relationships.

  • Sharing your honest experience feels like a huge risk.

  • You're worn out by what feels like a barrage of judgment.

If these sound true for you, I want you to know that the reality is that nonreligious people are both valid kickass humans and commonly experience marginalization in the Southern United States. It makes total sense that you struggle at times and its okay to seek support that understands you.

How Secular Therapy Works

Secular Therapy provides a commitment to an evidence-based practice helping you navigate human challenges. The evidence-based framework I use is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Through ACT, I support clients in creating space for their experience, putting together what's most important, and making space for growth and grief. We will call on your experience and self-knowledge to give our work a sense of direction. Much of our work together is focused on building self-compassion. Therapy moves at your own pace. Secular Therapy consists of 50 or 75-minute, one-on-one sessions that help you work through your concerns. In addition to listening,  I will share what the science tells us about what's going on for you and help you better understand the context of your challenges, I play an active role. Here’s how it will work step-by-step:

Research shows that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can alleviate your struggle with thinking, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. ACT gives you new tools in you navigate life's challenges.
